Diary of a Furloughed Federal Employee – Day 1

On Day 1, I went to the office for 2 hours to conduct activities required for an orderly shutdown. I finalized my time sheet; changed the out of office message on e-mail and outgoing voice mail greeting; made sure I knew all my passwords so I can get back on line when we’re recalled; and figured out how recall instructions will come. I went to the gym and worked out, then to Daily Dish for a free cup of Furlough Day coffee (Thanks, Sara Brosnan, for the link to City Paper’s furlough offers site.) While at the Daily Dish I was interviewed by a contract reporter from Voice of America about the sequestration and furlough; I don’t know if they picked up the story (can’t find it on line), though.

For the rest of the afternoon, I chatted with friends on Facebook, played video games, and followed the breakdown of negotiations on C-Span. In the evening, I went to chorus rehearsal. After rehearsal, we went to Limerick Pub for drinks and food. Then I came home, checked the status of the negotiations breakdown and went to bed.
